We find when talking to customers, that the term "Log Burner" is often used to describe both a Log Burning Stove in the true sense, and a multi-fuel stove that can burn both logs and smokeless coal.
A true Log Burning Stove has a solid base. That is because you don't need any air flow from below to burn wood. You can only ever burn wood on this type of stove.
If however, your Log Burner has an ash pan and an adjustable grate, then you are in fact in possession of a Multi-Fuel stove, which is a much more versatile appliance.
Open the grate to allow air flow from below and your stove will happily burn smokeless coal. The advantage of this is that smokeless coal gives out a lot more heat than kiln dried firewood and is therefore a more economical way of heating your home.
Close the grate to stop the air flow and you convert your stove back to log burning.
