What Can Anthracite Customers Expect when they switch into a CPL Manufactured Fuel

Modified on Tue, 5 Dec, 2023 at 12:36 PM

Customers switching from Anthracite into a manufactured smokeless fuel can benefit from longer firelife and higher heat outputs.  The pros and cons are summarised in the table below:

+/-

Attribute

The Differences

What this means

Solution

-

Ash Level

Ash level is slightly higher, but more importantly the ash is different being much lighter

Lighter Ash, reaches parts of the appliance that heavier more granular Anthracite Ash just cannot get to

Customers will need to adopt a more detailed and thorough cleaning and maintenance schedule to ensure air ways remain clear and performance is maintained

+

Fire Lighting

Slightly Easier / Same

Made easier by consistent shape of a CPL Ovoid.

Use plenty or air and kindling, but then experiment to find best solution

+

Firelife

Should be longer, better fire.  Ash helps increase firelife.

Higher Heat Output and Longer Firelife means that customers will start to use less CPL manufactured fuel, leading to savings in their heating bills

+

Heat Output

Higher - more sustained, with a longer peak

+

Slumbering

CPL ovoids will slumber & recover well, but need to get set up correctly to work successfully

Advice is to run the fire hard before and after slumbering.  Refuel, and then open vents to get the fuel burning for 20-30 minutes depending on the appliance, then close the vents down.  Repeat in the morning to recover the fire

o

Sulphur

Within legal limits at less than 2%.

Authorised for use in Smokeless Zones

+

Shape

CPL ovoids are a consistent, uniform shape

Pack together in to a nice tight firebed, helping to increase heat output and firelife

-

Smell

CPL Ovoids are made using a Molasses binder

Can cause stronger smell on ignition

This is expected and will go away in a few minutes

+

Calorific Value

Calorific Value (CV) of Anthracite can be anywhere from 29,000 to 33,000 CV depending on the seam it comes from.

Phurnacite is consistently in region of 32,500 CV

+

Environment

CPL Ovoids manufactured using up to 15 percent renewable material

Lower net emissions of Green House Gases when burning

+

Cost

Higher heat & longer firelife mean that over time customers will use less CPL ovoids for same heat output

Better Value for Money & Lower heating bills

Summary

CPL Ovoids last longer and with a higher heat output than Anthracite, but have slightly higher ash

Customers will notice the differences, some positive, some negative

If prepared to experiment and follow the advice given, customers will end up with a high performing fuel that in the long run will save them money.
